Placement / Internship Visa

Hassle-free visa processing for your travel needs.

Overview

The Placement / Internship Visa is designed for third-country nationals (non-EU/EEA) who wish to undertake a mandatory or sponsored placement/internship in Germany. This visa is required for internships that exceed 90 days within a year or when the placement is a formal requirement of your degree program. Approval from the Federal Employment Agency (BA) is mandatory, and this must be applied for in advance by the future employer or hosting university.

Eligibility & Purpose:

  • Intended for students currently enrolled at a UK university who are undertaking a study-related internship/placement.
  • Only those who have completed a minimum of four semesters (for undergraduate students) qualify for a study-related internship exceeding 90 days.
  • The internship must be either mandatory for the student’s course or formally sponsored.
  • The internship contract and confirmation of agreement (“Einvernehmen”) from the Federal Employment Agency are required.

Visa-Free Travel Note (for British students and other eligible nationals):

  • British students enrolled at a UK university may not require a visa or residence permit if their internship is related to their course and does not exceed 90 days within 180 days.
  • For internships exceeding these limits, a visa is required, or British citizens may apply for a residence permit upon arrival in Germany.
  • All new residents must register their address (“Anmeldung”) with local authorities within 2 weeks of moving in and apply for a residence permit at the local immigration office (“Ausländerbehörde”) within the first 90 days.

Important Considerations:

  • You may only begin your internship once you have been issued a residence permit that explicitly authorizes employment as an intern.
  • If you opt to apply for a visa prior to travel, your employment as an intern is permitted from the first day of visa validity.
  • All other nationalities require a visa prior to travel to Germany.
