Work Permit Visa

Hassle-free visa processing for your travel needs.

Overview

To work in Germany, you must obtain a residence permit (work permit) before entering the country. This visa category is designed for skilled workers and academic professionals who have secured employment in Germany. Accompanying family members must apply together as part of the same group. Note that citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway enjoy freedom of movement similar to EU nationals. In addition, citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Korea (Republic), Japan, New Zealand, and the United States of America may apply for their residence and work permits after arrival in Germany. However, regardless of the applicable privilege, you may not commence employment until you have been issued a residence permit explicitly authorizing such work. If you wish to start working immediately upon arrival, you should apply for your visa from your current country of residence.

Eligibility & Purpose:

  • Intended for skilled workers and academic professionals with a confirmed job offer in Germany.
  • Certain visa categories require an academic degree or recognized vocational qualification.
  • Your prospective employer can facilitate visa processing by applying for pre-approval from the Federal Employment Agency.
  • Some regulated professions (e.g., medical doctors, nurses, teachers, architects, auditors, tax advisors) require a formal license to practice in Germany.
  • Applicants aged 45 or older with an annual salary below the specified threshold may need to provide evidence of adequate retirement provisions.

Visa-Free Travel Note (for eligible nationalities):

  • British citizens and eligible nationals from Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Korea (Republic), and the United States may apply for their residence permits at the local immigration office (“Ausländerbehörde”) after arrival in Germany.
  • You must register your new residence (“Anmeldung”) with the local authorities within 2 weeks of moving in and apply for your Electronic Residence Permit within the first 90 days of your stay.
  • Employment may only begin once a residence permit explicitly authorizing work is issued.
