The Airport Transit Visa is required for certain nationals who must pass through a German airport while en route to another destination. Note that UK residents holding a valid UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) are exempt from this requirement. The visa is applicable only for transit purposes, and applicants must remain in the international transit area of the airport unless otherwise stated.
Eligibility & Exemptions:
UK residents with valid Immigration/E-Visa Status and Share Code do not require an airport transit visa.
British citizens and holders of UK 1951/1954 Convention Travel Documents are also exempt.
Nationals of specific countries (e.g., Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, etc.) require an airport transit visa unless they hold a valid visa or residence permit issued by a Schengen member state, certain third countries (e.g., USA, Canada, Japan), or are otherwise exempt as outlined by the German mission.
A valid UK visa does not exempt an applicant from the transit visa requirement.
Applicants must remain in the international transit area unless circumstances (such as baggage collection or re-check) necessitate passing through passport control, in which case a C-type entry visa may be required.
Important Considerations:
This visa is strictly for transit purposes only; if you intend to enter the Schengen area, a different visa is required.
The exemption applies only if the transit occurs at one of the designated German airports with an international transit area (e.g., Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf).
Applicants are advised to verify with their airline whether boarding is possible without the required transit visa if not exempt.

It is strongly recommended that applicants submit a complete set of documents as outlined below. All documents must be recent (not older than one month) and presented as originals along with photocopies. Documents not issued in German, English, Spanish, or French must be accompanied by a certified translation into German or English.
Application Form:
Printed and signed visa application form (Videx short-stay online application form, including the barcode page).
A separate application form is required for each applicant, including children.
Passport:
Valid original passport signed by the holder, issued within the last 10 years.
Must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen area.
Must contain at least two blank pages.
UK Residency:
UKVI Immigration/E-Visa and Share Code for “right to work” or “Prove your immigration status” (For all non-UK passport holders)
Photographs:
Two UK passport-sized photos.
Size: 35 x 45 mm, taken on a white or off-white background (no digital alterations).
Proof of Occupation:
Confirmed return travel ticket (airline, ferry, or train) showing the applicant’s name and travel dates.
Note: Filing a complete application does not guarantee visa issuance; fully refundable tickets are advisable.
Additional Documents for Minors (if applicable):
Separate VIDEX application form for each child, signed by both parents or all guardians.
Originals of both parents’ passports and the current UK residence permit (if applicable), with photocopies.
Original birth certificate of each child along with a certified translation if not in English, German, Spanish, or French.
For unaccompanied minors, a declaration or letter of consent signed by both parents authorizing travel and designating a responsible person is strongly recommended.
